Earth Finishes
What are earth finishes anyways? Good question. Earth finish, natural finish, and organic finish are all loosely defined terms. To us, Earth Finishes mean we are choosing products that consider the health of our staff, your family, and our planet. Products that are made from materials that humans have been building with for centuries. Products that are composed of elements that are found in nature and require minimal processing. Such materials include clay, lime, earth pigments, straw, mica, and much more. Earth Finishes are modern and ancient, simple and luxurious, sensible and bold.

Why choose an earth finish? First of all, nothing else compares when it comes to beauty and feel. Being surrounded by clay feels good. Earth-based materials such as clay and lime give a room depth, warmth and aliveness. They stir, or rather settle, something deep inside of us that allows us to relax into the safety and beauty of our home.

Civilizations around the world have been building and decorating with earth for centuries. Some examples of earth-building techniques include adobe, sod, rammed earth, and cob. The oldest cob building is believed to be over 10,000 years old! Some of the oldest cave art is made of Ocher pigment, the same pigment we use in our clay paints and plasters today. These days most of us live in modern homes finished with drywall and paint. These materials are versatile and easy to access however they have their limits and disadvantages. Today, you don't have to have a staw bale home or a home built with wattle and daub - you can transform nearly any modern space with "natural" plasters and paints to achieve the beauty and ambiance of an earth-built, or old-world home. Gnomes and nag champa are not required to enjoy the beauty and benefits of this timeless material. Architectural Digest recently said about plaster walls “the warmth and texture of plaster has taken hold. And it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere”. Clay, lime, and minerals are timeless even in your modern home.

Clay Plaster
Clay walls bring your home to life. Clay plasters have been used by cultures across the globe for ages. They are one of the "greenest" finishes you can put on your walls. Our closest, reliable clay source is near Medford, Oregon. We also work with a manufacturer out of New Mexico that produces reliable and easy-to-pigment plasters for modern construction that allow for many color options, including bright white.

Lime Plaster
Lime plasters are luxurious and versatile, bringing added durability compared to clay alone. They can be rough and rustic or polished to a marble-like finish. Like clay plasters, lime plaster can be applied over previously painted walls, new drywall, and straw bales. Additionally, lime plasters can be applied over brick or stone (yes, including that old fireplace!) and can be finished to be water-resistant and even waterproof. Forget the tile - let's plaster! With so much versatility, sourcing and mixing is determined by the scope of the project.

Lime Wash - Paint
Limewashes and lime paints have been used for centuries on traditional buildings, wood fences, and brick structures. Limewash/paint provides a cost-effective, breathable finish. Lime paints can also be applied to previously new drywall and previously painted walls, transforming your space into one that is soft, comforting, artistic, and unique. This specialty finish can be left as-is to patina or sealed to provide added durability and washability.
